Design work to improve streets through downtown Frisco and create a plaza on Fourth Street will begin in October.

During the Sept. 3 meeting, Frisco City Council awarded a contract to Kimley-Horn & Associates to create a conceptual design for the project.

This comes after the council approved an updated downtown master plan in 2018.

The updated plan includes a Fourth Street Plaza in the heart of downtown, a design district that would attract new businesses and a new design for Main Street.

In the plan, the median on Main is planned to be replaced with a center turn lane while the sidewalks are widened. The on-street parallel parking is planned to remain for now.

The plaza would run along Fourth from Oak to Elm streets. A portion of Fourth could be closed to traffic so the plaza can be pedestrian-focused. The plaza is intended to bring in new restaurants and urban living.
