At the Southlake City Council meeting Tuesday night it was announced that developer Tres Burros, LLC withdrew their application, which requested that four acres located at the southwest corner of White Chapel Boulevard and Southlake Boulevard be rezoned from office to retail.
If the zoning had been approved, the developer had plans to build Southlake Commons, which would have consisted of three single-story retail commercial buildings.
The rezoning did go through a first reading. Four out of seven council members voted for the rezoning to go to a second reading. The four members that voted in favor were John Huffman, Randy Williamson, Chad Patton and Shawn McCaskill.
However, residents living near the property expressed their opposition to the development, citing increased traffic and the possibility of a drive-thru restaurant in the development as their reasons for opposing. An online petition was also started. The petition had 7,936 signatures, but only 1,358 of those signatures were from Texas residents.
Southlake's city attorney said the developer can come back at a later time but would have to restart the application process and go before the Planning & Zoning Commission and City Council again.
