At the July 5 Grapevine City Council meeting, council members voted in approval to send a measure to the Nov. 8 election ballot, that if passed by voters, will open the door for liquor stores. Currently, shoppers can buy beer and wine at retail stores and mixed drinks at restaurants in the city but must drive to nearby cities like Colleyville to buy packaged liquor. A Political Action Committee, Grapevine Citizens for Total Wine & More PAC, submitted a petition on May 27 to the city of Grapevine calling for the local election. A total of 5,339 signatures were collected, 4,590 of which were verified by the Tarrant County Elections Administration. Only 3,864, or 35 percent of registered Grapevine voters, was needed for the petition to be certified. The PAC first submitted a petition for the sale of liquor on April 18. However, the petition was denied because the group did not have enough verified signatures. The petition has the financial backing of Total Wine & More, a liquor, beer and wine retailer. The Maryland-based liquor store chain most recently paid for petition costs in Allen, where voters passed the petition by more than 61 percent. Total Wine has two stores in Plano and others in Dallas, Lewisville and Denton.
