The city of Frisco has officially called for a local option election in May regarding the legal sale of all alcoholic beverages. The election will take place May 7, 2016. If passed, the measure would allow packaged liquor stores within Frisco’s city limits. Since approval in 2002, beer and wine sales for off- and on-premise consumption, as well as sales of mixed beverages at restaurants are allowed through the city’s permitting and zoning process. Political action committee Frisco Committee for Economic Growth submitted the petition to the City Secretary’s office Aug. 21, and city staff and volunteers verified 9,943 signatures, 154 more than what was needed to validate the petition. All of the council members who spoke about the petition during the Oct. 6 meeting did not support the petition. Several said the signatures were gathered using false information and that the petition did not represent the values of the city. Council Member Will Sowell said Frisco’s success hinges on its ability to be a city that is welcoming to families. “Nothing that is being presented here tonight in this petition aligns with the values of families. It just doesn’t,” he said. The language for the May election ballot will say “the legal sale of all alcoholic beverages including mixed beverages.” Frisco City Secretary said the ballot language comes straight out of the Election Code.
