The city of Southlake is starting the year off with the openings of two grocery stores– Fresh Market, which opened in January in Park Village, and Trader Joe's which will open next month.
However, there may be a third grocery store to follow if Kroger gets approval by the Southlake City Council at its Feb. 3 city council meeting.
Kroger would be the anchor of new development Southlake Town & Country, located at the southeast quadrant of Dove Road and Hwy. 114.
The proposed Kroger would be 103,634 square feet and would open sometime in 2015.
Some residents have shown strong opposition against Kroger by attending city meetings to express opposition, speaking to council members and even starting a Facebook page "Stop Kroger in Southlake," which has 572 "likes."
Organizers of the page have asked its page-likers to do things such as avoid the existing Kroger, located at 2110 E. Southlake Blvd., during the Thanksgiving holiday, pass out flyers in opposition and attend the Feb. 3 meeting to voice their opposition.
Residents in disapproval argue the new Kroger would increase traffic by an additional 10,000 cars a day, would lower property values and cut acres of trees.
The Planning and Zoning Commission denied Kroger 5-2 at its Nov. 20 meeting and it is now up to the council to approve or deny the grocer.
