The speed limit along an approximately 0.8-mile portion of McDermott Drive between Alma Drive and Watters Road is expected to increase.
Allen City Council approved the change from 40 mph to 45 mph for the identified section of McDermott Drive at a Feb. 10 meeting.
The specifics
The change comes after an engineering and traffic study indicating that 85% of drivers are already safely operating vehicles in the identified section of roadway at above 45 mph, city documents state.
In addition, eastbound traffic driving toward the Watters Creek Village shopping center follows a downhill slope, which makes it difficult to maintain a speed of 40 mph, per city documents.
All new speed limit signs are scheduled to be installed by March 4, Communication Manager Kristi Soto said.
The signage update will cost approximately $1,200, Soto said. The funds will come from the engineering department’s operating budget, per city documents.
Looking ahead
Allen City Council will meet again at 6 p.m. Feb. 24 for a work session with a regular meeting to follow at 7 p.m.
Community members can view meeting agendas on the city’s website.
