In its upcoming Feb. 9 regular meeting, Jersey Village City Council is expected to select a design for a new municipal pool and finalize a phased approach to city campus construction, among other action items on the packed agenda.
The overview
The city presented three pool concepts to community members during a Jan. 6 town hall and collected feedback about ideal layout, features and programming opportunities.
According to the Feb. 9 agenda documents, residents voiced the most support for a design that includes one large body of water, with eight lanes for lap swimming on one side and the other side dedicated to recreational use. The proposed pool design also features a waterslide and a shallow end.
The preliminary cost estimate for the most favored design ranges from approximately $4.8 million to $5.7 million, but the amount is subject to change once the design is finalized and the project is sent to bid. Voters approved a $6.5 million bond in November to fund the project, Community Impact previously reported.
The two other concepts under consideration include a design with one body of water but six lap lanes instead of eight, as well as a design featuring two different pools to separate lap swimming and athletic programming with recreational use.
Other details up for discussion include adding a pool heater, a diving board and a dive well, which altogether would increase construction and maintenance costs by approximately $231,500.
Another detail
Council members will also discuss amending the city’s phased approach to construction of the city campus, which was presented as an alternative to building the entire complex at once after residents voted down a bond that would have funded the project.
On Dec. 3, council directed city staff to move forward with planning for two phases of city campus construction:
- Phase I: city administrative offices and public works building
- Phase II: lobby, City Council and municipal court chambers, meeting rooms, community classrooms and recreation center
However, a city campus subcommittee recommended the first round of construction include the lobby, putting estimated costs for Phase I of the project at about $9,416,000, according to city documents. City staff is seeking council authorization of the adjusted scope of work.
Also on the agenda
City Council’s Feb. 9 regular agenda also includes four amendments to the fiscal year 2025-26 budget:
- Transferring $770,000 from the general fund to the capital improvement fund to cover design work for phased construction of the city campus
- Adding a $10,000 line item general fund expense to acquire election equipment
- Amending the general fund to account for the sale of property located at Hwy. 290 and Jones Road
- Including $206,652 in the Crime Control Prevention District Fund to cover HVAC system replacement at the Jersey Village Police Department
