Former state Sen. Don Huffines was appointed as the Texas comptroller of public accounts, Gov. Greg Abbott announced July 2. Huffines will officially begin his service Aug. 1.
“Don Huffines brings the right mix of business experience and conservative principles to this vital office,” Abbott said in a statement. “He is a fifth-generation Texan, successful businessman, and proven conservative leader who puts taxpayers first. His private-sector experience and dedication to limited government make him exceptionally qualified to lead the state’s finances and protect every taxpayer dollar with integrity and accountability.”

Huffines, a Dallas-area native with a bachelor's degree in business administration in finance from The University of Texas at Austin, will take over as the state's finance and budgeting officer from acting Comptroller Kelly Hancock. Abbott noted Huffines' co-founding of the Metroplex-area real estate developer Huffines Communities and previous state legislative service in his July announcement.
