Q&A: Meet the candidates running for Texas House District 49 in November’s election

Why are you running for this position?<br>

I am running to put the people of Texas, our planet, and peace over profit. I want to challenge corruption and the politics of the status quo, while bringing youth into government. We ought to center protecting our communities, ending corporate power, and developing economic justice for a better future!<br>

What would your top priorities be if elected?<br>

My priorities are building an economically just Texas, freezing rents, developing social housing, creating universal healthcare, strengthening public schools, and protecting Texans’ rights. I will fight the billionaire class profiting from working people’s labor while they struggle to survive. Government should serve the people, not wealthy insiders or political machines!<br>

How will you ensure your constituents receive the appropriate aid after natural disasters?

I will establish a disaster response team to help Texans navigate federal and state relief programs and access emergency assistance. I will work to increase state funding for disaster relief, coordinate with local governments and nonprofits, track unmet needs, and ensure resources reach affected communities quickly and equitably throughout Texas!<br>

What projects are most important for the legislature to focus on for the future of Texas?<br>

The legislature should prioritize affordable housing, public transit, strong public schools, universal healthcare, resilient infrastructure, and clean energy. We must protect Texans’ rights, invest in communities rather than corporate profits, and ban AI data centers that strain our power, water, and infrastructure. Texas must serve its people!<br>

Why are you running for this position? <br>

I’m running to make sure every Texas child has a fully funded school, every worker earns a fair wage, and every family has the chance to thrive. As a teacher, union leader, and public servant, I know how to organize, build coalitions, and fight for the residents of HD 49.<br>

What would your top priorities be if elected?

My top priorities are increasing affordability, supporting our public schools, and improving access to high-quality healthcare. Addressing housing, childcare, and cutting costs are essential. We must expand job opportunities and protect workers’ rights. We deserve modern, connected, and resilient communities so I would also prioritize clean energy, infrastructure, and transit.<br>

How will you ensure your constituents receive the appropriate aid after natural disasters? <br>

I will work with local, state, and federal partners to ensure constituents can quickly access disaster assistance, including emergency housing, food, financial relief, and infrastructure support. I will strengthen multilingual outreach, help residents navigate FEMA and other aid programs, and ensure underserved communities are not left behind during recovery.<br>

What projects are most important for the legislature to focus on for the future of Texas?<br>

Texas’s future depends on investing in people and communities. We must strengthen schools, healthcare, and affordability; expand workforce development; protect reproductive freedom, equality, and voting rights; and build resilient infrastructure—water, broadband, transit, flood and wildfire mitigation, and a modern power grid. Our focus must be solutions, not division.<br>
