Faubion Elementary students will be rezoned to either Westside Elementary or Reed Elementary in the 2026-27 school year, following the closure of Faubion at the end of the current school year. The LISD board of trustees approved the rezoning plan during its Feb. 5 board meeting.
The details
Administration presented the board with two attendance rezoning options.
Under the approved scenario "B," students currently zoned to Cedar Park Middle School will attend Westside Elementary, and students currently zoned to Henry Middle School will attend Reed Elementary.
Per agenda documents, this option prioritizes feeder patterns and alignment between elementary and middle school attendance boundaries.
Chief Operations Officer Jeremy Trimble said this scenario is most in line with results from a community survey, saying LISD's existing intra-district transfer policy provides flexibility for families prioritize staying together or attending a specific campus.
Additionally, the scenario provides greater long-term stability for enrollment and facility utilization for long-range planning and supports operational and program efficiency, he said.
Scenario "A" suggested that all Faubion zoned students attend Westside in order to keep the school community together. The middle school feeder pattern would also remain split, as 115 Faubion students are currently zoned for Henry Middle School.
How we got here
The board voted Dec. 17 to close and repurpose Faubion in 2026-27 due to the campus' projected low enrollment and LISD's projected multimillion-dollar budget shortfall.
Officials also considered closing and repurposing Steiner Ranch Elementary, but instead voted to direct administration to bring back a comprehensive districtwide alignment plan for the school and other campuses located in the southern part of the district facing declining enrollment.
Something to note
According to district officials, current Faubion students will receive priority for intra-district transfers. The fee will be waived, and the transfer window will remain open until May 29.
What they're saying
According to the community survey results, having balanced enrollment was the "common ground" between keeping students together and aligning feeder patterns, Trimble said.
Community members also expressed concerns with overcrowding and stressed the importance of peer relationships and having a stable and consistent learning environment.
What else?
Administration also recently approved an architecture firm to begin the process of repurposing the Faubion campus, which officials say could be used for secondary education such as New Hope High School's expansion, the Leander Extended Opportunity Center or the Early College High School.
