The city of Leander is considering three candidates for the city’s new fire chief. The search for a new chief began after Fire Chief Bill Gardner retired in February. Assistant Chief Robert Curr has been working as interim fire chief in the meantime. The city reviewed 52 applications and narrowed down the finalists to Robby Bergerson, Jim Self and Billy Wusterhausen, according to an April 24 press release from the city. A final selection will be made in May. The new fire chief will be in charge of a department of 71 people and manage an annual operating budget of $8.9 million, according to the press release. The public is invited to meet the candidates Sunday, April 28, from 3-5 p.m. in Pat Bryson Municipal Hall at 201 N. Brushy St., Leander. During the meet-and-greet, finalists will give presentations and answer questions from the public. Read about the candidates and their experience below.
