1. YMCA could bring new recreation center
A large recreation center with fitness, youth programs and new athletic fields could be coming to Bastrop through a renewed partnership with the YMCA. Bastrop City Council approved a $30,000 feasibility study July 14, examining whether a YMCA facility could succeed in the community.
Bastrop City Council backed Capital Area Rural Transportation System’s pursuit of funding for up to 15 e-bikes at the Bastrop Park & Ride and public library. Grant selection, final fleet size and operating rules are under review.
3. Old Iron Bridge to get color-changing lights ahead of holidays
Bastrop’s historic Old Iron Bridge will be able to glow in different colors by the holiday season after Bastrop City Council approved a $300,000 lighting addition to the bridge’s rehabilitation project June 26. The contractor’s cost breakdown includes 24 RGB lights at $5,000 each, or $120,000, while the remaining costs are tied to conduit, wiring, junction boxes, a lighting control panel and related work.
4. SH 71 renumbering could affect nearly 1,700 Bastrop County addresses
Nearly 1,700 Bastrop County addresses along SH 71 could be renumbered as local leaders work to fix a confusing labeling system that officials said could delay emergency response. A committee tasked with reviewing potential solutions is expected to begin meeting later this summer.
5. Lost dog reunion spotlights new Bastrop microchip scanner program
A lost dog that escaped during a stop at Buc-ee’s is back with its owner this week after Bastrop Animal Control Officer Robert McBain scanned the pet’s microchip—an early example of how city officials hope new scanners and a public microchip scanning station will help more animals get home faster.
