Bastrop County plans $140.5M judicial complex for more courtroom capacity

Bastrop County officials unveiled plans for a $140.5 million judicial complex designed to expand courtroom capacity and modernize justice system infrastructure to keep up with a growing population.

The Bastrop County Judicial Complex project is outlined in the county’s Capital Improvement Plan for fiscal years 2026-31, which was adopted Jan. 29.

Approximately $10.5 million of the $140.5 million is budgeted for planning and architecture.

“Population and demographic studies for Bastrop County continue to show projections for substantial growth,” according to the CIP. “As the population continues to increase, the demand for county services will also increase.”

Offices for these services are largely provided by those currently operating in and around the Bastrop County Courthouse and Jail Complex, such as the district court, district attorney and district clerk.

A relocation to a new judicial complex, officials emphasized, will provide the currently used offices more room to expand and increase court efficiency, according to the CIP.

Some background

The CIP identifies immediate, short-term and long-term needs.

It accounts for a total of $219 million in projects, such as building and expansions, information technology upgrades, and county roads and bridges improvements, according to county documents.

“The [CIP] represents the county’s commitment to invest in our infrastructure while managing growth,” Bastrop County Auditor Jennifer Pacheco said in a Jan. 26 letter to commissioners. “A [collaborative] effort will ensure that capital funding will be allocated appropriately and implemented on projects that will provide the greatest benefit to the county.”

The outlook

The judicial complex will be built on county-owned land beginning in fiscal year 2028-29, according to the CIP.

Bastrop County officials did not respond to Community Impact’s inquiry for a more specific location as of press time.
