According to unofficial results from Hays County officials, Kyle voters have approved a $36 million road bond that will fund construction to five roads around the city; 69.7 percent of voters cast their ballots in favor of the bond.

Kyle Mobility Committee member Joe Bacon said the election represented a victory for Kyle voters.

"It means there is finally a plan in place for roads in Kyle," Bacon said. "We worked very hard on it and we're very proud of the results."

The five roads to receive improvements are Bunton Creek, Lehman and Goforth roads as well as Burleson Street and Marketplace Avenue. According to the project timeline, engineering for the five roads will begin in 2014.

In early voting, Kyle voters approved a $51.9 million bond election that will fund improvements to five roads. According to early results, 69 percent of voters cast their ballots in favor of the bond and 31 percent voted against it.

The five thoroughfares to be improved are Bunton Creek, Lehman and Goforth roads, Marketplace Avenue and Burleson Street.

City Finance Director Perwez Moheet estimated the bond's cost would total about $51.9 million with interest. Moheet prepared a tax impact analysis that estimated the average increase in a Kyle property owner's tax bill would be about $259.48 over a six-year period. After city council called the election in March, Moheet said any residential or commercial growth within Kyle will reduce his estimate.

"I wanted the citizens to know this is the worst case," Moheet said. "Anything else would be better news than this. If we add more property to the tax roll, we get more sales tax revenue. Anything in those arenas would help offset the tax impact."

Assuming Moheet's worst-case scenario, the bond election will increase Kyle's property tax rate by 20.75 cents per $100 of home valuation. Kyle's 73.19-cent property tax rate would make it the highest in Hays County.

According to the project timeline, the improvements will take place over six years. Each of the roads will be engineered during the first year and one road will be completed in each of the following years. The current timeline lists the order of roads as Bunton Creek Road, Lehman Road, Burleson Street, Marketplace Avenue and Goforth Road.
