The Texas Department of Transportation announced Tuesday it will be closing I-35 main lanes near William Cannon Drive both Friday and Saturday nights in order to demolish the south side of the old William Cannon overpass.

The closures are part of an ongoing project to improve I-35 from Stassney Lane to William Cannon Drive.

U-turn bridges at Stassney Lane, which have also been under construction as part of the project, will officially open Thursday in anticipation of the weekend closures.

Friday closures will take place from 10 p.m. until 9 a.m. Saturday morning. On Saturday evening, main lanes will be closed from 11 p.m. until 10 a.m. Sunday morning.

According to a news release from TxDOT, I-35 traffic will detour onto the north and southbound frontage roads during the construction period. William Cannon traffic will be detoured to Slaughter Lane, the release stated.

Overall, the improvement project is expected to be completed in the winter of 2020 at a total cost of $79 million, according to TxDOT.
