Two City Council members dedicated thousands of dollars from their office budgets to local park improvements as permitted under new policies that regulate their spending.
What happened
Dedications from council office budgets approved Feb. 26 included:
- $100,000 for an off-leash dog area at Circle C Metropolitan Park in Southwest Austin, contributed by council member Paige Ellis
- $6,500 for improvements at Springwoods Neighborhood Park in Northwest Austin, contributed by council member Krista Laine
The council office budget transfers to Austin Parks and Recreation are allowed under revised expense guidelines adopted Jan. 22. Those policies let council members move funds to city departments, as long as officials publicly pass a resolution to clearly document the "maximum amount, purpose, and recipient department(s)." That new allowance was proposed last month by Ellis and comes as officials are considering ways to more directly influence funding for priority projects within their districts.
