First responders are conducting an active shooter response exercise at a Dripping Springs ISD elementary school July 26, ahead of the upcoming 2024-25 school year.

What’s happening?

The training includes personnel from the Hays County Sheriff's Office, Hays County Constable's Office, North Hays County Fire Department and DSISD security.

A heavy presence of first responders will be around Cypress Springs Elementary School, 11091 Darden Hill Rd., Driftwood, from 7 a.m. to noon July 26, where the training will take place.

Residents may hear sirens and simulated gunshots, district officials said.

What else?

This summer, other safety trainings to prepare for the school year included a reunification training, in which DSISD staff were trained in reuniting students with their families in the event of an evacuation, early June.

An armed school resource officer or school marshal is placed at every DSISD campus, in compliance with House Bill 3 from the 88th legislative session, DSISD director of safety Sirenna Cumberland said. HB3 requires armed security on all campuses.

DSISD students return to class Aug. 13.
