As Elon Musk's Austin-area empire continues to grow, a new office expansion is on the horizon for his brain-chip company Neuralink.

On July 15, construction began on a new, $14.7 million building in the East Austin suburb Del Valle, according to a filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.

The 112,000-square-foot facility design sits on 37 acres of land owned by Neuralink Corp., just 20 minutes away from Tesla's Giga Texas headquarters.

The building will include three stories with offices, a machine shop and manufacturing areas, according to the filing.

Some background

Founded by Musk in 2016, the California-based technology company Neuralink aims to create implantable brain-computer interfaces that allow people with disabilities to operate mobile devices and computers with their thoughts, according to the company website.

Musk's plans to create Neuralink facilities in Austin were first proposed to Travis County in 2022 under the entity name River Bottoms Ranch LLC.

Per county documents, multiple office buildings are part of the proposed site plans, and in April, the first project filing on the property detailed a $1 million office space.

Neuralink did not immediately respond to a request for further details about the campus.

The news of Neuralink's expansion comes on the heels of Musk's announcement of his plans to move the headquarters of X, formerly Twitter, to Austin and SpaceX to South Texas.

Public information specialist Hector Nieto confirmed Travis County has not received any project proposals or permit requests associated with X as of press time.

X could not immediately be reached for further comment.
