SLAB BBQ & Beer opened in Sunset Valley in October at 6218 Brodie Lane, Austin.

Slab is known for the McDowell, its rib sandwich, as well as El Jefe, a brisket sandwich with grilled onions, peppers, jalapenos, queso and barbecue sauce.

Owner Raf Robinson crafted the hip-hop-themed menu to showcase barbecue styles from across the United States in sandwich form. SLAB BBQ began as a food truck on The University of Texas campus in 2006. Robinson said in a past interview with Community Impact that SLAB is an acronym for “Slow, Low and Bangin,’" with the final word coming from the Houston hip-hop scene. SLAB draws influences from “all barbecue regions,” taking elements from Texas, Memphis, St. Louis, Alabama and the East Coast. The SLAB staff smokes meats slowly and at low temperatures every morning, an essential process for making good barbecue, Robinson said.

The barbecue spot has three other locations in Austin. For more information, visit www.dopebbq.com.
