The city of Austin announced the completion of road improvements along San Jacinto Boulevard and Trinity Street earlier this month, a project aimed at enhancing transportation options and improving safety.

About the project

The result of a partnership between the city of Austin and public transit agency CapMetro, the road project included the creation of new transit priority lanes for buses and protected bike lanes, as well as improved pedestrian crossings along the two intercity roadways.

The initiative aims to enhance mobility along the corridor by introducing the bus-only lanes, which will streamline operations for 10 existing CapMetro routes, according to the city. These lanes, reserved for transit vehicles and cars making right turns, help organize traffic flow and increase efficiency by moving more people in less time.

These lanes will support new Project Connect MetroRapid lines set to launch this spring.

Additional improvements expected to enhance multimodal mobility options include new protected bike lanes and improved pedestrian crossings. Parking and vehicle access were also maintained along the corridor.

The framework

The road project started this past August and was included in Austin’s voter-approved Mobility Bonds, costing a total close to $1 million for improvements.
