Austinites have a say in what I-35’s caps and stitches will look like after the Texas Department of Transportation completes its $4.5 billion plan to widen 8 miles of the interstate throughout Central Austin.

Our Future 35, a group formed by the city and TxDOT to design the caps and stitches over the newly constructed corridor, will welcome public feedback at an open house event May 18.

Caps are large decks built over a lowered highway that can feature greenery or buildings on top; stitches are widened bridges that accommodate cars, bikes and pedestrians.

Attendees will see early designs of the caps and stitches, and be able to provide input on the amount of green space and amenities planned for the structures.

The event will have free food, drinks, music and kid-friendly activities such as balloon artists and face painting. Free child care will also be provided.
