Travis County Commissioners commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Family Medicine Residency program this month, which gained its initial accreditation in August 1974, according to county documents.

The details

The graduate medical education program, now based at the Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin, has a long history of serving the Central Texas community through various local health clinics, the former Brackenridge Hospital and Ascension Seton. Since 2015, Dell Medical School has overseen the program.

Designed to train future physicians in real-world settings, the residency program emphasizes patient safety and high-quality care, according to the county’s proclamation.

A product of the program, Program Director Dr. Dana Sprute said the Family Medicine Residency Program has produced hundreds of family physicians, the majority of whom remain in Texas.

“We've had over 300 graduates, and over half—about 60%—stay in Austin or the Austin area,” she said.

Primary care family medicine makes up the biggest part of the graduate medical education program at the medical school, Sprute added.
