Kahn's planned retirement, effective June 30, was announced in an April memo from City Manager T.C. Broadnax. Kahn's last day in the office will be April 30 and Broadnax said he'll share more about a transition plan at AE in the next few weeks.
Kahn was appointed to lead AE in July 2023 by then-interim City Manager Jesús Garza following the retirement of former General Manager Jackie Sargent. He'd previously served in AE's legal services and as a deputy general manager, and is earning $494,000 this year.
Across several decades in the power industry, Broadnax credited Kahn's "pivotal role in shaping electric utility policy" while working as an attorney at the Public Utility Commission of Texas regulatory agency, president and CEO of the state grid manager Electric Reliability Council of Texas and most recently as general manager of North Texas' Texas Municipal Power Agency. He also said Kahn oversaw "meaningful progress" at AE over the past two years.
"Under his leadership, the utility strengthened its financial position, improved system reliability, and successfully advanced a new Resource, Generation and Climate Protection Plan to 2035," Broadnax said. "These accomplishments reflect Bob’s steady leadership and his commitment to building a strong foundation for the future of public power in Austin."
