The details
The clinic will be open Jan. 8-12 at the Travis County Exposition Center, 7311 Decker Lane, Austin. Pet care includes spay/neuter surgeries, vaccinations and microchips.
What to expect
Registration and pet drop-off will begin at 7:30 a.m. and last until 10 a.m. each day of the clinic. Pet owners will remain in their vehicles for registration and will be served on a first-come, first-served basis. There is no limit to how many animals one can drop off, and the community is encouraged to bring roaming cats as well.
Those dropping off pets must comply with the following qualifications:
- Participants must be a Travis County or Austin resident
- Pets must weigh at least two pounds and be two months old
- Cats must be in a secure carrier
- If a pet has been vaccinated in the last year, pet owners must provide proof of vaccination
- If a pet is nursing, the owner must alert staff
Spaying and neutering pets prevents animal overpopulation and reduces the amount of strays in the community, according to a news release from the Austin Animal Center.
Affordable spay/neuter care in Austin is not always accessible, according to the news release. The cost can range up to over $1,000, depending on the clinic and the pet.
Some pets must have appointments made up to a year in advance. There has been a 6% increase compared to 2023 in the intake of puppies of kittens under 4 months old, according to the release.
One more thing
This clinic is the third free event in the past five months and more are planned for 2025. This upcoming clinic has a goal to complete 1,300 surgeries.
