The race for Austin ISD trustee at-large Position 8 continues as none of the six original candidates from the Nov. 5 election received enough votes to win the position. Candidates Fernando Lucas de Urioste and Lindsey Stringer are headed to the December runoff election.

The overview

De Urioste led the race in the Nov. 5 election with 32% of the vote with 65,263 votes, while Stringer held nearly 26% of the vote totaling 52,181 votes, according to results from the Travis County Elections Division.

The at-large Position 8 role is one of two members that oversees the entire district. The other at-large position, at-large Position 9, is held by AISD board President Arati Singh.

About the candidates


De Urioste has campaigned on student and staff retention rates, improving the budget deficit, and prioritizing transparency of operations.

His platform also focuses on advocating for improved state funding. De Urioste cites his position as vice president of Texas Organization of Parents, Attorneys and Advocates as relevant experience for legislative advocacy regarding education, as previously reported by Community Impact.

Stringer is an AISD graduate, parent and volunteer. Stringer has campaigned on improving teacher salaries, increasing community engagement and developing better student outcomes for students who receive special education services.

Stringer’s platform also focuses on addressing district financial issues and advocating for more state funding. Stringer said her knowledge of education policy at the state and local level, as well as her experience in the classroom, will be beneficial in this position, as previously reported by Community Impact.

Early voting turnouts for Austin’s December runoff elections were low, as previously reported by Community Impact, with only 2.43% of eligible Travis County residents casting ballots. The runoff also features races for Manor mayor and Austin City Council's District 7 seat.

Various polling locations in Travis County will be open from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. for the runoff Dec. 14. Voting for the at-large position is eligible for voters who reside within the school district.
