The overview
The Girls FLAG Football League will begin their competitive play this spring. Every AISD high school will form a varsity-level 7-on-7 team to participate in the league, a news release states.
The season will end with a championship tournament in May at the Ford Center in Frisco, home of the Dallas Cowboys headquarters.
AISD is one of 11 districts in Texas to partner with the Cowboys to start girls flag football leagues.
The background
The Dallas Cowboys organization and AISD have been collaborating over the last nine months to form the league.
Each participating school district receives grant funds for the program, including funding for coaching stipends, team uniforms, equipment packages from USA Football, coaching education, general support from NFL FLAG and other startup costs, according to the news release.
Also of note
The new program will offer girls learning opportunities especially as the sport grows, said Charlotte Jones, Dallas Cowboys co-owner and chief brand officer.
“The life lessons and values these young ladies will learn from the game of football extend well beyond touchdowns and teamwork,” Jones said. “We are also thrilled that with girls flag football becoming an emerging sport at the collegiate level, the game can now provide these young women a path to continuing their education at a higher level as well.”
Texas recently got its first collegiate women’s football program at Concordia University Texas, the first university in the state to do so, as previously reported by Community Impact.
