Austin ISD officials deemed a former school campus as surplus on Oct. 24, opening it up for monetization in the future.

What’s happening

The AISD board of trustees passed a resolution 7-1 to deem the former Rosedale School campus, located at 2117 W. 49th St., Austin, as surplus. Officials said it no longer accommodates “future district needs."

The resolution paves the way for district officials to monetize the campus through the lease or sale of the 4.62 acre tract of land, according to district documents.

Board member Lynn Boswell abstained from the vote.

How we got here

The original Rosedale School, which opened in 1939 to serve special education students, vacated in 2022 due to the school’s outdated infrastructure, according to previous Community Impact reporting.

Through the approval of the 2017 Bond, AISD officials developed a modernized facility for Rosedale students at the former Lucy Read Pre-K campus on 7505 Silvercrest Drive, Austin. Students and staff then vacated to the new campus in February 2022, according to previous Community Impact reporting.

Law enforcement agencies began using the former Rosedale location as a training facility in February 2024.

Why it matters

The approval of the resolution comes in the midst of a $119 million budget deficit at AISD and uncertainty about a tax rate election to combat the deficit.

Upon approval, officials will begin efforts to monetize the old campus location, according to district documents.

Rosedale is one of six school campuses being repurposed.
