A former Austin ISD school will temporarily open up to local law enforcement agencies, including the Austin Police Department and Travis County constables, to be used for training.

The district is allowing the campus to be used for this purpose as safety in schools is top of mind, AISD officials said.

The background

The site was the former Rosedale School, located at 2117 W. 49th St., Austin, a campus exclusively for students with special needs. The facility was constructed in 1939 and named for the neighborhood it resides in.

Due to structural issues, Rosedale students and staff moved to a modernized campus in February 2022 at 7505 SilverCrest Drive, Austin. This was funded by the 2017 bond.

Rosedale’s previous campus became one of multiple sites that are being repurposed by district officials.

What’s next?

Conversations surrounding the repurpose of the facility include a concept for housing that would prioritize AISD staff and community members.

District officials will continue to discuss how to permanently repurpose the facility in 2024.
