Voters within Austin ISD’s boundaries will weigh on four board of trustees seats and a potential tax increase in November.

Up for election

For the board of trustees, 10 candidates are running for seats after filing by the Aug. 19 deadline.

Trustees represent districts and have a four-year term of office. Incumbents Kevin Foster and Lynn Boswell are running for re-election uncontested for their seats in districts 3 and 5, respectively.

On the ballot

Voters will also weigh in on an 8.3% property tax increase that officials are hoping will help offset a budget deficit.

If approved by voters, district officials predict a voter-approval tax rate election, or VATRE, would generate $171 million in revenue under a tax rate of $0.9505 per $100 valuation. Due to recapture, AISD will keep $41 million of this revenue. This is an increase in $130 million of recapture payments under the VATRE.

This would be a $34-per-month increase to the average homeowner, or an estimated $412 per year, according to AISD officials.
