Not Your Ordinary School, or NYOS Charter School, officials announced the appointment of Mechiel Rozas as superintendent in June.

The overview

Rozas has served as both a teacher and a principal, and holds a Ph.D. in education from The University of Texas. Most recently, she served as superintendent of Legacy Traditional Schools, a charter school in San Antonio.

The announcement of the new superintendent this summer comes after Executive Director Kathleen Zimmermann left for a position with IDEA Public Schools earlier this year. Zimmermann had a salary of $160,000 as of October, according to the Texas Education Agency.

Quote of note

“I look forward to leading NYOS as we experience significant growth in both achievement and enrollment,” Rozas said in a news release. “The mission and core values of NYOS match both my own core beliefs and research-based practices.”

The background

NYOS is located in North Austin at 12333 N. Lamar Blvd. and is a tuition-free charter school serving pre-K through 12th grade. Charter schools are public schools and receive federal funding but are subject to fewer state laws, according to the TEA.
