During the next meeting of the Austin ISD board of trustees, the board will officially appoint the district’s new superintendent and approve an employment contract.

The overview

Interim superintendent Matias Segura was named lone finalist for superintendent on Dec. 14, a decision made after the board deliberated on a total of six applicants.

State law requires the board allows for at least 21 days after the finalist is approved to sign a contract for the superintendent position.

On Jan. 25, the board of trustees will appoint Segura and approve the contract during a board meeting.

What else?

Community members will have a chance to ask Segura questions at two public forums. The first will take place on Jan. 18 at 6 p.m. via Zoom, and the second will take place Jan. 20 at noon at Marshall Middle School.

The background

A year prior to becoming the district’s finalist for the position, Segura was named interim superintendent in December 2022. This followed an announcement in November that former interim Superintendent Anthony Mays would leave the district for a position in Houston.

Prior to Mays’ departure, former Superintendent Stephanie Elizalde left the district in June 2022 for a position in Dallas ISD.

Quote of note

"[Segura] is Austin ISD's first homegrown superintendent,” board member Kathryn Whitley Chu said Dec. 14. “He's a product of Austin ISD, the son of a beloved Austin ISD teacher and a proud parent of two Austin ISD students. [Segura] is a shining example that anything is possible for Austin ISD students."
