What started as a Mexican market in Bouldin Creek along South First Street in 1985 has transformed into a longstanding icon of authentic Tex-Mex cuisine in Austin.

A closer look

The original location, coined the “gateway to South Austin,” features a menu ranging from classics such as fajitas and tender carne asada to crispy tacos and enchiladas.

For those looking for a libation to pair with dinner, the restaurant also offers a selection of margaritas, cocktails and beer options.

Though the company has had other locations over the years, today there is only one other location in North Austin along Burnet Road.

About the owner

El Mercado opened 40 years ago this August as a Mexican food market with a small kitchen, where customers could pick up masa or spices and grab something to eat at the counter.

As the demand for the kitchen’s food “blew up,” Villegas said he and his father, Camilo Villegas, had to clear out the shelves to make space for more customers wanting to stay and eat.

In time, the restaurant engulfed the founding market concept as El Mercado’s expansion continued to an outdoor patio and live music venue.

Today, the space regularly features local artists.
