The U-Haul location at I-35 and Airport Boulevard is closing at the end of the business day March 31 after 20 years in business.

The details

The retail, moving and storage center opened in 2005. The property will go to the Texas Department of Transportation as part of the I-35 expansion, according to a news release from the company. The release also states that seven team members will be let go due to the closure.

What they're saying

“This was a prime, five-star location for U-Haul,” U-Haul Company of Austin President Kristina Ramos said. “We’ll miss our great customers that had been storing their belongings here for more than 20 years.”

The background

The I-35 Capital Express Central project consists of removing the upper decks, sinking portions of the roadway about 25 feet below ground level, adding two high-occupancy vehicle lanes in each direction and widening the corridor to a range of 17-22 lanes, according to previous Community Impact reporting. Officials said they are hopeful the project will alleviate congestion, improve walkability and increase east-to-west connections.

The ongoing facelift of the major highway, which broke ground in October, will cause lane closures and the displacement of businesses, according to previous Community Impact reporting.
