A new pub dedicated to streaming women's sports has opened in downtown Austin, just in time for the start of March Madness.

The details

1972: ATX Women's Sports Pub opened on Guadalupe Street near The University of Texas at Austin campus on March 19. The pub takes over the space previously housing Moody's Kitchen and Bar, which closed in January.

1972 co-founders Debra Hallum and Marlene du Plessis have been crowdfunding and working to open the pub's doors since last spring. The business is named after the year Title IX, a federal law prohibiting sex discrimination in education programs and activities including athletics, was signed into law.

The pub will stream only women's sports year-round and aims to be a community hub for local women's sports teams and their fans. Hallum said 1972 is a place for everyone.

"We anticipate fans of all types," Hallum said. "No matter your age or gender, what sport you love, we anticipate it to be supported by everyone."

She and du Plessis celebrated the pub's grand opening at a ribbon-cutting ceremony with the Austin LGBT Chamber of Commerce, Mayor Pro Tem Vanessa Fuentes and women's sports fans, athletes and supporters.

"This is a milestone moment for our city to introduce and welcome our first women's sports pub," Fuentes said. "It's been a long time coming, and honestly, it makes so much sense for a community like Austin. We are a growing city. We're a community that values inclusivity, that values diversity and representation so for us to have an area where folks can go and check out women's sports and have a good drink and hang out with friends and family in the middle of West Campus, it's a beautiful thing."
