A new pub dedicated to streaming only women's sports will open in Central Austin this fall.

Meet the owners

Formerly ATX Women's Sports Pub, 1972 was co-founded by Debra Hallum and Marlene du Plessis. The two announced the concept last April and have been crowdfunding to support startup costs. The pub's new home will be at 2530 Guadalupe St, Austin, near The University of Texas at Austin campus.

The inspiration

1972 will be the first of its kind in Austin. The idea to open the city's first women’s sports bar came after a visit to Rough & Tumble Pub, Seattle’s women’s sports bar.

“We came back and started checking things out and wondering if we could do it, and found out that we do have a lot of sports fans here in Austin, and that we have a lot of local women's sports teams that we found out about,” Hallum said.

She said their goals are to support local women’s teams and be a place for players to build relationships with their fans.

According to a news release, the pub will feature big screens showcasing women’s sports year-round, an extensive menu, and a welcoming environment for all fans, including men, the LGBTQ+ community and allies.

“In order to elevate women and women athletes and women's sports, we need everybody. It can't just be women, right? We need everyone,” Hallum said.

The release states that 1972 will open in time for March Madness.
