The Cathedral, an East Austin 1930s church turned art gallery, is celebrating its fifth anniversary this October.

The backstory

Founded by Mónica Ceniceros as the home for atxGALS, an all-women and nonbinary artist collective, The Cathedral opened in October 2019 in a space that used to be New Hope Missionary Baptist Church. The church was renovated to preserve its historical integrity.

Since its opening, The Cathedral has been able to support more minority artists, invest in local musicians, and donate to nonprofits and cultural programs.

“As we celebrate the fifth anniversary of The Cathedral, I’m filled with immense pride and gratitude for the community we’ve built,” Ceniceros said in a news release. “What started as a vision to amplify the voices of women and nonbinary artists has evolved into a vibrant space where art, creativity and collaboration thrive. The Cathedral is more than just a venue; it’s a home for local artists, a place where ideas are shared, stories are told, and culture is celebrated."
