The first transportation project in Kyle's 2022 Road Bond Program has finally broken ground.

The city of Kyle held a groundbreaking ceremony Oct. 15 to kick off construction of the extension of Marketplace Avenue, according to a news release.

How we got here

In November 2022, Kyle voters approved Proposition A, which funds eight transportation projects totaling 10.3 miles across Kyle. These road bond projects will be reconstructing and widening existing roads to improve the city's transportation network, according to the news release.

The details

Construction will be for a .06-mile, four-lane collector road with a raised median and center turn lanes. The turns lanes will connect the northern and southern segments of Marketplace Avenue, which will provide connectivity for drivers and relieve traffic congestion, according to the news release.

Mayor Travis Mitchell said this was the first project to begin construction because it goes entirely through green field. He also said the property owner, Rick Sheldon, donated the right-of-way for the road project so the city did not have put money into purchasing the dirt.

Notable quote

Kyle Police Chief Jeff Barnett said the project would enhance public safety.

"Today's groundbreaking is more than just about infrastructure. It's about investing in the wellbeing of our community," Barnett said. "This roadway, once complete, will connect our residents and our visitors to future vital medical services as well as our ever growing variety of amazing dining and shopping opportunities."
