The city of Kyle will begin piloting a home repair and improvement program in partnership with Austin Habitat for Humanity by the end of this year, Chief Development Officer Melissa McCollum said.

How it happened

Kyle City Council directed city staff to establish a program to provide resources and assistance for the maintenance of private properties for property owners on fixed incomes on May 7. The dais approved implementation of the pilot program Sept. 17.

The details

The city has received 45 home repair inquiries relating to plumbing, flooring and HVAC issues, electrical, roof and structural repairs, and more, according to agenda documents. Since this will be the program's first year of implementation, the city is looking to limit improvements for each household to up to $10,000, McCollum said.

To be eligible for home repair and improvements, individuals must own and occupy the home being repaired. The home must also be located in the city of Kyle, according to agenda documents.

Other eligibility requirements are as follows:
  • The home must more than 10 years old.
  • The homeowner must not be more than 60 days behind on his/her mortgage, in danger of foreclosure, being condemned.
  • The homeowner is current on his/her property taxes (including payment plans) or has a deferral.
  • The homeowner has or is willing to secure homeowner’s insurance (this may be waived for households who are under the 30% Austin-Area Median Family Income).
The pilot program is also income-based.

One more thing

McCollum said the city decided to partner with Austin Habitat for Humanity because of the organization’s established presence in the region.

“We’re hoping to utilize some of their expertise,” McCollum said.
