Kyle City Council voted 6-1 on second and final reading to repeal an ordinance that allowed the mayor and council to access health insurance on the same terms as full-time city employees, and amend the city's budget on Aug. 6.

Council member Bear Heiser was the single dissenting vote.

How we got here

At a special meeting on Aug. 3, the dais voted 5-1 to repeal ordinances 1310 and 1043.

Ordinance No. 1310 amended the city's budget for fiscal year 2023-2024, which had previously authorized the mayor and City Council members to access the city's health insurance program on the same terms as full-time city employees.

The amendment to Ordinance No. 1043 was to remove the language allowing the mayor and council members access to city health insurance benefits if the full cost of the city's premium is deducted from their salaries, according to agenda documents.

The impact

By repealing the ordinance, the city's proposed expenditures would decrease by up to $11,090 per month, according to agenda documents.
