San Marcos City Council allocated approximately $1.4 million in Community Development Block Grant funds for the 2024-25 program year on Aug. 5.

This federally funded program provides grants to cities, states and counties on an annual basis to provide affordable housing and encourage infrastructure development.

How we got here

San Marcos allocated $766,063 in CDBG funding this year from the Department of Housing and Urban Development. During an April work session, council voted to reallocate $639,927 in CDBG funds from projects from previous years to bring this year’s allocation to $1.4 million according to agenda documents.

Project funding

CDBG monies will fund sidewalk and park improvements; city programs; and community organizations, such as the Hays-Caldwell Women’s Center, Salvation Army, St. Vincent de Paul and Greater San Marcos Youth Council.

Next steps

The city must submit the final action plan, approved by council, to HUD by Aug. 16, Carol Griffith, housing and community development manager told Community Impact in an email. Within 45-60 days from submission, HUD will review the plan and either approve it or provide comments.
