Alex Villalobos will be Hays County's Democratic candidate for the county sheriff election.

By the numbers

Villalobos ended the election with 5,713 votes, making up 67.35% of total votes.


There was one other Democratic candidate—Daniel Law—vying for county sheriff. Law received 2,770 votes, making up 32.65% of total votes.

What the candidates are saying

Law said he had an "uphill battle" but was not bitter about the loss.

“It is what it is. I did the best I could, and it didn’t work out," he told Community Impact.


Villalobos described winning as “humbling.”

“It leaves an impression on you both mentally and physically to have that much support,” Villalobos told Community Impact.

What's next

Villalobos and Republican nominee Anthony Hipolito will face off in the November general election. Incumbent Hays County Sheriff Gary Cutler opted not to seek re-election. The Republican was first elected sheriff in 2010.

With 95 out of 95 precincts reporting, unofficial voting results indicate that Alex Villalobos will be Hays County's Democratic candidate for the county sheriff's election.

What you need to know

There was one other Democratic candidate—Daniel Law—vying for county sheriff. Law received 4,348 votes making up 30.94% of total votes.


Villalobos received 9,707 votes, which makes up almost 70% of votes.

In early voting, there were 7,156 ballots cast countywide, which represents 5.08% of Hays County's 175,737 voters.

Polls closed at 7 p.m., although voters who were in line at 7 p.m. were still able to cast ballots.
