According to board documents, Hays CISD preemptively adopted its 2023-2024 school calendar back in January, moving it to March 18-22 to match the University of Texas at Austin, under the guise that other campuses would follow suit.
“Generally, the reason we say UT is because they match the other universities in the area—[Austin Community College], Texas State [University]—and that all usually matches [South by Southwest Conference & Festivals], which we usually experience a high absentee rate both in staff and students attending or participating in the festival,” Hays CISD Chief Communications Officer Tim Savoy said.
However, ACC and the Austin-area school district kept the week of March 11 as spring break.
Board members said they were pleased with the change in the calendar.
“I think it’s going to work out great,” Trustee Vanessa Petrea said.
The board of trustees will meet again at the Kunkel Room at the Historical Buda Upper Campus on May 22 at 5:30 p.m.
