Texas State University released official enrollment numbers Sept. 27, announcing that for the sixth straight year the school has seen a significant increase in enrollment of both undergraduate and graduate students; it now has 38,661 students in total.

Compared to 2017, the university saw a 3.6 percent increase in freshman enrollment and an 11 percent increase in the number of graduate students.

The school is also becoming more diverse. As of this semester, the demographics of the student population are 37 percent Hispanic, 11 percent African-American and 2.5 percent Asian.

"This year's enrollment continues the trend of our student population becoming more representative of the State of Texas' population as a whole," said Denise Trauth, president of the university, in a written statement. "This reflects the university's ongoing mission to serve the citizens of Texas and to play a leading role in preparing the workforce for the coming decades."

A rising number of students has put pressure on the housing market in San Marcos, which is currently taking steps to address housing costs that have significantly increased in recent years.
