Upon entrance, the walls of the Dos Olivos Market in Buda feature rows and columns of wine. On the opposite end of the shop are rows of locally made, family-produced artisan goods available for sale. Throughout the shop are seats and tables for dining in, culminating in a setting for a "sobre mesa," time spent with family and friends at the dinner table after a big meal.

The family-owned market and eatery was formerly known as Los Olivos, which roughly translated to "the olive trees," but father-daughter duo Rafael and Rebecca Varela swapped the "L" for a "D," translating to "two olive trees," which were actual trees gifted to Rebecca's grandfather years ago. Those trees were planted at the family farm in Dripping Springs and led to the eventual enterprise now know as Dos Olivos Market.

The Varelas opened the Buda location during the onset of the pandemic at the Buda Mill & Grain Co. nearly two years after the first location opened in Wimberley.

Beyond the Buda and Dripping Springs locations, the Varelas opened a location in Harlingen, near the border city of Matamoros, where Rafael is from, cementing their past and history in their business.

Rebecca's mother's side of the family still resides in Spain and helps with the scouting and sourcing of vendors to stock the market.

"We really want to keep it local, very artisan. We don't want it to feel like a large grocery store; we want to make sure that whenever a customer comes in, they'll find things that they won't find anywhere else," Rebecca said. "We are a family business, so we want to make sure we support family businesses as well."

The market features a range of goods from Spanish-imported oils to jams and jellies to butter spreads.

The menu for food features appetizers called "shareables," family-style servings, personal-sized items and deserts as well as an array of wine to choose from.

"We really just wanted to bring in those European roots, the wine, the beer, the food and just the culture," Rebecca said.
