An old Austin favorite has officially been resurrected, with a new take on an old concept officially opening in Kyle.
The restaurant A Little Shady has opened near Kyle Crossing, inspired by Austin's original Shady Grove, which was founded in 1992 at 1624 Barton Springs Road in Austin. Shady Grove closed in May 2020, according to previous Community Impact reporting.
The restaurant honors the original spirit of the Shady Grove restaurant, while introducing a new space and fast-casual service, according to a news release.
Quote of note
"We're excited to finally open the first A Little Shady in Kyle," owner and operator Rusty Zagst said. "Our team is passionate about great food, genuine hospitality and creating memorable experiences. We can't wait to welcome longtime Shady Grove fans and introduce a new generation to what made it so special."
On the menu
Customers can enjoy Shady Grove’s "greatest hits," offering a taste of nostalgia, such as:
- Green chile cheese fries
- Tortilla fried queso catfish
- Hippie sandwiches
- Grilled wings
New menu items include the Quickie Dog, which is a mini hot dog topped with homemade Airstream chili, queso and onions.
The new location features indoor and outdoor full-service bars serving handcrafted cocktails—such as the Green Chile Gimlet, In Shady Fashion and Frozen Shady Thangs—in souvenir cups as well as ice-cold draft beer.
A closer look
The decor throughout the restaurant also has a nostalgic feel, inspired by the road-trip charm of the 1970s. One area of the restaurant is designed to feel like your best friend's basement, while the kitchen area mimics a mom's retro kitchen. The large outdoor seating area even features the original 1954 Gulf Airstream trailer from Shady Grove.
A Little Shady will be open Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m.-10 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m.-11 p.m., according to the release.
