Slowly but surely, the city of Kyle is growing, not only in terms of population but in square footage.

During the Jan. 5 meeting, City Council held a public hearing and approved a first reading of an ordinance to annex roughly 30 acres of land from Hays County that should eventually lead to complete incorporation of the property.

No street address has yet been assigned to the property, but the agricultural land lies closest to Bunton Creek Road and borders the southern boundary of Lehman High School.

Council gave unanimous approval came during its Dec. 15 meeting to initiate the annexation process, which involves Section 5 of the Cassetta Ranch subdivision.

Assistant City Manager James Earp said the annexation is the result of an agreement between the city and property owners that began in 2015.

“At the time, the property was under an agricultural exemption,” Earp said. “So, it was given a development agreement in lieu of annexation, which the owners then transferred to the owners of Cassetta Ranch.”

Cassetta Ranch is now in the process of finalizing the 30-acre plat of land, and Earp explained that in order to do so, the city must now finalize the annexation process.

Following the Jan. 5 initial reading of the ordinance, which states council has heard and grants the annexation request from Brohn Homes, the second and final reading is scheduled for Jan. 19.
