The property—owned by Henry and Marian Oles—is one of the oldest and most historic commercial properties in the area. The couple purchased the building in 1988 to serve as the headquarters for their company, EPS Photographic, and to develop a lease space for other businesses, according to a news release.
Looking back
A group of investors began construction on a large cotton mill in 1924. But construction stalled the following year when a severe drought destroyed cotton crops. The building was completed in 1928 but instead of supplying cotton, investors decided to turn to wood scouring to better serve Texas farmers. The mill turned tons of thousands of raw wool into clean white wool for weaving.
The Old Mill produced thousands of wool blankets for soldiers in World War II and then later the blankets were sold nationwide to JCPenney's, according to the news release.
What the owners are saying
Henry Oles said The Old Mill has been a part of their lives for over thirty years, and they have worked diligently to keep the building updated while respecting its legacy.
Marian Oles said they have put a lot of love, sweat, time and resources into The Old Mill because they appreciate its history.
"We hope all our tenants and guests are able to enjoy the space and support local businesses who call The Old Mill home," Marian said in the news release.
What else?
The Old Mill is also one of the first buildings in Central Texas to be built entirely with poured in place concrete and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places by the U.S. Department of Interior, the news release states.
