Kava Kava Down officially opened its doors Feb. 9.

Kava is derived from the roots of the Kava plant, which is native to the Pacific Islands, Director of Operations Randi Rickaway said.

"It's been used for years and years to promote relaxation and reduce stress," she said.

The shop, which is locally-owned by MJ Keith, offers a selection of Kava-based beverages, which can be mixed with pineapple, peach nectar or cherry-flavored juice.

Kava Kava Down also offers carnival-style foods such as street tacos, pretzels, chips and queso, and sandwiches.

"We have a cotton candy machine where we can actually make fresh cotton candy on the spot," Rickaway said.

The kava shop also hosts different events including drag shows like "Drag Against Humanity," which incorporates Cards Against Humanity with the drag performances. Kava Kava Down hosts "Weird Movie Wednesdays" where they show "cult classic films" and invite people to talk about the film, Rickaway said.

"We're [going to] start doing 'Throwing Hands Thursdays,' which will be like Smash Brothers Tournaments... and Mortal Combat to bring in some of the college crowd," she said.
