Studio San Martian, a San Marcos-based art gallery and organization located at 1904 Old Ranch Road 12 in the Crestwood Center, is closing at the end of August.

The cause

Back in March, the businesses located in the Crestwood Center were at risk of closing due to an out-of-compliance septic system that posed health and safety risks to the community. Later that month, property owners reached and an agreement with the adjacent property owner but needed to raise $200,000 by the end of that month to connect to the city's sewer system and remain in business.

Although the center was able to get added to the city's sewer system, property management had to front a significant amount of funds, causing rent to increase.

"Us being a small art business, we were barely able to pay our bills as it was, so it really put us out, unfortunately," Studio San Martian founder Kelsey Huckaby said.

The studio, which opened in August 2018, held a wide range of art workshops, yoga classes, tea sits, live music, meditations, poetry nights, film screenings, vending events and more. Individuals could also rent the studio.

What else?

Despite the closure, Huckaby said it has been a "beautiful experience."

"We're just grateful that we had the space, that we got to bring so many people together," she said.

Huckaby said she hopes they might be able to find a more suitable location in the future, but the studio currently has no plans to relocate.
