Amanda Alexander and her friends opened Southwest Training, a strength and conditioning gym located at 212 W. San Antonio St., Ste. A, in San Marcos, on Jan. 23.

“There’s not a lot of strength and conditioning gyms here in San Marcos. We really wanted to create an environment where we could continue working out with our friends but also help serve the market in a place where we knew that just didn’t exist,” said Alexander, a longtime San Marcos resident and co-owner of the gym. “We were ecstatic to find something downtown so we could really be part of the community and do more events and be more involved.”

Alexander said Southwest Training focuses on ensuring people are working out safely and “aging athletically.”

“A lot of people don't know where to start when it comes to fitness; we’re able to provide programming that helps build on foundations of strength and conditioning,” she said. “We offer group classes that help people be able to come in at any fitness level. We’re able to scale our programming, so whether you're a beginner or you're experienced, we’re there to make sure that you’re doing things safely but also help you push harder and get to your goals as well.”

Southwest Training holds training sessions Monday through Thursday from 6 a.m.-7:30 p.m. and Friday from 6 a.m.-7 p.m. They also hold sessions on Friday from 6 a.m.-7 p.m and Saturday from 9-10:30 a.m.
